The 105mm M101A1 Towed Howitzer is in service in the
RNZA both as training equipment and the equipment of three TF batteries.
The M101A1 gun is American in origin. It served the
US Army with distinction in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. It first came into New
Zealand service in Vietnam as it was discovered that the L5 Pack Howitzers did not stand
up to the high rate of fire required. M101Als were acquired from the Americans, and they
soon proved to be simple and rugged guns that were reliable and easy to maintain. New
Zealand's M101Als were overhauled in the US in 1988 and now use the same sight unit as the
